The Restoration of a Sinning Saint
John MaCarthur’s sermon called The Restoration of a Sinning Saint looks at Jesus restoring Peter after he had denied Him three times.
How do you listen
Have you been to church today? If so you probably heard a sermon. Do you remember what the sermon was about? What do you think God was saying to you through the sermon?
It’s easy to listen to the sermon each Sunday and yet completely forget what it was about come Monday morning or dare I say even by Sunday afternoon! Tim Challies has posted a very good article on his website today entitled “Consider how you listen” in which he lists six things we should seriously consider whilst listening to the sermon.
I was particularly struck by the second point he makes which reads:
Give diligent heed to the things that are spoken from the Word of God. If an earthly king were to issue a royal proclamation, and the life or death of his subjects entirely depended on performing or not performing its conditions, how eager would they be to hear what those conditions were! And shall we not pay the same respect to the King of kings, and Lord of lords, and lend an attentive ear to His ministers, when they are declaring, in His name, how our pardon, peace, and happiness may be secured?
This has never really occurred to me before whilst listening to a sermon. In my head I know that the sermon is the minister bringing God’s word to us but I’ve often not shown the same respect to it as I should. I think that if I listened like that my life might benefit!
Why the Sermon?
Every Sunday we have a sermon in our church which lasts approximately 20 minutes. In the church I grew up in the sermon normally was about 45 minutes long although there were occasions when it stretched to an hour.
So what is the point of the sermon? Is it just to fill a time slot in the service? Is it just the opportunity for our pastor / vicar to speak for a while and the congregation to switch their brains into neutral or take a nap or is there any eternal purpose in it?
Ben Patterson has written an article entiled “Why the Sermon?” where he discusses the eternal purpose of this weekly exercise.
Preaching
Preaching the sermon to the congregation is a very serious responsibility for those who are called to this role. With this in mind I have found a couple of interesting items on other websites which might help those who are called to preach.
Steve Mathewson has written a piece entitled A Mandate For Application in which he mentions that during sermon preparation the following two questions should be addressed:
1) What is the one thing I want my audience to know?
2) What do I want them to do about it?
Adrian Warnock has written a posting called Ten Conclusions About Preaching in which he lists some important conclusions he has come to concerning preaching.
