Listen to God during Lent
Yesterday our vicar spoke on the transfiguration of Christ from Mark 9. Jesus had taken Peter, James and John up a mountain with him and as he spoke with them his clothes became dazzling white. Elijah and Moses then appeared and spoke with Jesus. The disciples were frightened and Peter offered to build three shelters (i.e. for Jesus, Elijah and Moses). Then God spoke to them through a cloud and said “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to Him!”
I’ve read this passage many times before but I’ve never really noticed the words “Listen to Him!” It is essential as believers that we listen to Jesus. God obviously thought that it was important that we listen to Jesus as He would not have told us to otherwise.
In this busy world in which we live we must make time to listen to Jesus. If we don’t listen then we will not hear what Jesus is saying. And if we do not hear we will go astray.
How do we listen to God? One way that we can listen is by reading the Bible and asking God to speak to us through his word. Another way is by prayer. Praying involves listening as well as talking! Both of these will take time but they are disciplines that are important for our growth as Christians. Obviously we need to ensure that as well as listening to God we also obey Him when we hear His voice!
This coming Wednesday sees the start of Lent, which lasts for 40 days excluding Sundays, as we prepare to remember the death and resurrection of Christ at Easter. Lent is a time for study and repentance and the 40 day period reminds us of the time that Jesus spent on the wilderness being tested by the devil. This season of Lent would seem to be the ideal opportunity to spend time listening to God and obeying Him.
