Abraham The Man Who Kept Going To The End

For the final week of my series on Abraham I want to consider how he was a man who set his heart on following God’s way to the end. Abraham’s life was changed as a result of receiving and believing God’s promises to him. He had left both his family and country to follow God’s will for his life. His old dreams were dead and God had given him new dreams. And these dreams had opened up a new life to him.

There is an expression, relating to our walk with God, which says that it is not how you start that matters but how you finish. Near the end of his life we read in Genesis 24 about how Abraham sent his senior servant back to his own country to find a wife for his son Isaac. Abraham was determined that his son would not marry a Canaanite women but instead one from his home country. Additionally he also wanted Isaac to stay in Canaan and not return to his home land. Abraham had received the promise from God that his offspring would be given the land of Canaan so for him there was no turning back.

There may have been some ups and downs in his life but Abraham was committed to going the distance with God. The old country was the past and his descendants would be going forward in Canaan and not returning back. There would be no turning back for him like Lot’s wife.

Likewise when we meet with God the direction of our life should be changed forever. The goals and ambitions that we once had should be submitted to God. We must follow Abraham example and forget the past and concentrate instead of moving on with God with the new life he gives.  Sometimes when life gets tough the temptation to go back to the old land is strong. There will invariably be times when we get it wrong. Abraham certainly experienced failure but he kept going to the end. Let us learn from his example to us and keep going to the end.
